Dance just like music is a food for my soul. Whenever I feel low or depressed I tend to put up my favorite music and go crazy with it. For me dance has this weird kind of attraction in it; it’s total fun. It pulls me out of my stressful life and in imparts a sense of relaxation in me. Dance has always had a great importance in my life because all the plays or extracurricular activities that I’ve been a part of always had something to do with dance and music. Normal people dream of being the head girl and seeing that golden badge tucked on their sash, but not me as I always dreamt of being the dance rep! It’s probably because of the music-dance oriented culture of my school that inspired me to go up to the admin and suggest them to introduce the dance society at 1-A/1 and my hard work did pay off since I became the first ever dance rep of 1-A/1 (hahaha so much to be proud of :p). Well with the authority comes responsibility and I had to deal with all sorts of complaints and criticisms of Mrs. Shakil, but I boldly faced all the challenges that came my way in the face of Oliver Trancingo , Sir salman (our dance coaches), welcomes, farewells, Grammathon and numerous other events (like the khusro night and poetry night lums drama fest etc). I’ve been so passionate about choreography and dance that I performed on my own welcome (just imagine my dedication! Who on earth performs on their own welcome?! Well, I do). Before joining the council I only knew salsa but thanks to the dancing society I can very proudly say that I can do cha-cha, street dance, stomp, irish jig and Spanish dance.
Well dance is the only thing that people can be passionate about even if they’re not good at it.
Most of my day consists of rushing, assignments, and going to class. With all that, all my time is frequently taken up. It is very hard to find time for myself. It can get very hectic with homework, the weather and the lectures.
Different individuals have different hobbies. Some people are on the hobby of collecting stamps or philately. Some have attraction for writing books and editing in newspapers. Without any hobby of our own, our life would have been void of charm and joy.
When I do get the opportunity to have some extra time, I have another activity I enjoy doing. I engage myself in the hobby of basketball.
I think by this way I make the proper use of time. Since I was a little girl, I started to play basketball in the school team and also with my friends in the neighborhood. My mother told me that I liked kicking the ball around and had so much fun with it when I was only about three years old. Since then, playing basketball is my favorite sport and it is my hobby whenever I have free time.
Playing basketball also helps me to relax and be confident when I have stress and frustration. For example, after doing my homework or when I come home from my university, I play a little bit with my friends to get
relief of the tension and worries I face the whole day.
Whenever I play basketball, I feel healthy and stronger. I not only like playing basketball, but I also enjoy watching basketball on television. Also, during weekends, I would call up my friends to play basketball with me. After the intense games, we would go to the teashop nearby to relax and grab some cold drinks to cool us down from the games we had. It not only gives me a peace of mind but also help me enjoying with my friends too.
For me, basketball is a part of my life and it means a lot to me.
Most of the people confine hobbies related to sports and exciting activity to men. I fail to agree. Adventure is something that every human seeks because it gives them a sense of thrill and achievement.
Many of us let go of our interests and hobbies to assemble the daily demands of life, don’t do that. Life is about being happy, about being able to enjoy what you do, and trust me, there are many things that people enjoy doing.
Usually when a famous person is asked as to when their talent was first spotted they reminisce about their childhood and how even the first word they spelled was a clear indication of their love for their talent. In my case it was different. I was born amongst hundred ordinary children who are confused as to where their talent lies. For me it all started in A-levels when my sister who was in an Arts University begged dad to get her a professional Nikon camera. Like any younger sibling I was eager to get my hands on the new gadget in the house. I still remember the few times I had snuck the camera from my sister’s room and taken random pictures around the house only to be caught and scolded badly. But that wasn’t the end of it. I continued my quest. With a sea of random snaps came a lucky one. A snap that made it all begin. It was appreciated by my family and friends. Before I knew it I was clicking pictures of random things wherever I went. As time went by I got finer at it. Clicks weren’t random any more As I joined the university I realized that I can take my amateur passion to new levels. Exploring the photography society lead to few competitions held in university which made me confident enough to let people see my work. Soon I registered for the first ever PhotoWalk 2011 held in Lahore. Through much motivation and praise I was now a photographer.
Instagram a new application popular in Pakistan nowadays where people post pictures they want to share. We can also follow many inspirational photographers into gaining an insight of their work. I too have recently joined instagram in a quest to further polish my amateur skills and post pictures that I want to share with the world. Through my photography I try to capture magical moments. In our busy schedule seldom do we realize the magic held in simplest of things. We are exposed to so much in this era of technology that things don’t impress us much now. To me a fallen leaf, a white flower, chirping birds, sunsets and clear blue sky all seem magical and special.
Here is some of my work. Follow me on instagram mehru91.
Each day is a blessing; live it to the fullest.
